Bio
Dr. Dan Bock is a molecular ecologist who studies how global change drivers—such as biological invasions and extreme weather events—affect biodiversity. His research integrates genomics with large-scale field experiments to understand how species respond to abrupt environmental change and population declines, and to identify the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms that shape species resilience or lead to extinction under stress. Aiming to enhance biosecurity and conservation outcomes, he works closely with academic and government partners to support the translation of research findings into policy.
Research outputs linked to policy change and decision-making
- Dr. Bock’s research has been widely used to inform policy. To date, over 30% of his publications have been cited in policy documents — nearly three times the average for his discipline. These citations come from state, federal, and intergovernmental organisations, reflecting research translation at both national and global scales.
- Dr Bock’s work on genetic reconstructions of invasive species spread has been cited by the United Nations to support calls for stronger international biosecurity and invasive species regulations.
- Research conducted as part of the UBC Reproducibility Group, showing that the availability of research data declines over time, has been cited by the Australian and UK Parliaments, the European Union, the World Health Organisation, and IPBES. These citations have contributed to the development of improved international data archiving and transparency standards.
