Methods to measure temporal change in soil carbon

This research project is reviewing the current state of knowledge on measurement and modelling methods and techniques for estimation of soil carbon and soil carbon stock change in northern Australia. The result will be an assessment of the applicability and cost of current and proposed methods and techniques in the context of soil carbon levels and the response of soil carbon to changes in management practices as they occur across north Australia.

The project is collating research information through published literature and by contacting researchers for relevant information that is not yet published. A workshop with research experts and research users, particularly policy makers, including the Department of the Environment and relevant State and Territory Government Department representatives, will review the status of current research and identify research gaps.

• Report on the applicability and cost of current methods and techniques to estimate soil carbon in northern Australia;
• Recommendations on the research required to support, improve and as required calibrate at a regional scale to develop cost-effective methods for northern Australia carbon sequestration methodologies.

This research is applicable to the entire Northern Hub region.
