Hub researcher Jim Smart (Griffith University) was invited to present his team’s work on economic trade-offs at a Northern Australia Food Futures roadshow in North Queensland.

This event, organised by NT Farmers with support from Etheridge Shire Council, had a packed agenda and attracted around 100 growers, planners and government policy-makers from across Australia – Etheridge Shire is in midst of agricultural expansion, with cropping at Strathmore and Forest Home Stations, and planning underway for the Green Hills dam on the Gilbert River.

Associate Professor Smart presented an update on the links between Gulf rivers and coastal productivity, a project led by Professor Michele Burford (recently published findings here quantify thresholds for river flow and likely Gulf prawn catches).

Lyndal Scobell, the Hub’s Queensland Regional Research Coordinator, also provided an overview of the Hub and other relevant Hub research. Organiser, agricultural consultant and Hub Steering Committee member Ian Baker said Jim’s presentation ‘hit the spot’ with growers, and that more alliances must be built between farmers and environmental research.
