What are your research interests as they relate to northern Australia?

I am interested in the sustainable management of Gulf estuarine fisheries. To do so requires greater understanding of what drives population dynamics of fish (such as barramundi and king threadfin) and crustaceans (such as mud crabs), accounting for not only fishing pressure and human induced change but also environmental drivers, such as floods, droughts, and heatwaves.

What do you love about working in northern Australia?

I love the continual challenge (at all levels) that working in the Gulf of Carpentaria poses. Just when you think you understand something you realise how much more you need to know to truly understand the vast and complex systems that flow into the Gulf. My favourite place to work is the Gulf of Carpentaria and its amazing rivers, estuaries and associated species. I am impressed by the scale of process in this region and the amazing people that live and work in such remote conditions. I am also amazed by the contrast of Gulf systems from the dry to the wet, both within years and between years.
