Research outputs linked to policy change and decision-making

  • Threatened species ecology, distribution and survey. Dr Young’s research has focused on understanding the ecology and habitat requirements of threatened species to identify the factors influencing their distribution and long-term persistence. She has developed and tested more robust survey methods to improve the detectability of threatened species, generating more reliable data to support effective monitoring and decision-making. This work has contributed to assessing the impacts of development and other threats, and has informed conservation planning and management strategies. In her current role, Dr Young supports and collaborates on research and monitoring of threatened species, both within the Arid Recovery fence and in the surrounding landscape.
  • Invasive weed and predator ecology, impacts and management. Dr Young has studied the ecology of foxes and dingoes in the central Australian desert, and conducted research into red fox control techniques and the impacts of buffel grass on fauna. These studies have informed practical management recommendations and led to on-ground implementation. She currently supports, contributes to and conducts invasive species research and management at Arid Recovery and in the surrounding region, with a focus on improving conservation outcomes.
