What are your research interests as they relate to northern Australia?
My interests are in collaborative knowledge and governance systems – finding ways to support Indigenous peoples to mobilise and translate their knowledge, to bring it together with science, and to be involved in governance that actually recognises customary law and rights. Empowerment and knowledge are closely linked.
What do you love about working in northern Australia?
I love having the opportunity to contribute to the greatest challenges of our time – environmental protection and Indigenous rights and equity. Those moments when people are able to work through challenges and discomforts to find ways forward that are truly innovative, sustainable and deliver social justice. I have many favourite places, and top of the list is the Kimberley region because of the amazing country and the wonderful Aboriginal people, their cultures, languages, and the fantastic bunch of non-Aboriginal people and organisations supporting them. Also at the top of the list is Kuku-Yalanji Country in north-east Queensland, the rainforest, reef and again, wonderful people.
