What are your research interests as they relate to northern Australia?
I’m interested in understanding how ecosystems work, particularly how aquatic ecosystems are effected by changes in their watershed. I research processes of fundamental ecological importance such as primary productivity, organic matter decomposition and trophic interactions. In northern Australia, I have been trying to better understand how freshwater food webs work and how important groundwater is for surface-water ecosystems.
What do you love about working in northern Australia?
I love the isolation and the fact that most ecosystems remain free of large-scale human disturbance. I also love the people and the wonderful sense of community. My favourite place to work and play in northern Australia is the Kimberley – it’s vast and the colours are unlike anywhere on Earth.
