Project start date: 01/04/2024
Project end date: 30/06/2027
NESP funding: $3,550,000 (GST-exclusive)
This umbrella project will contribute to the recovery of Commonwealth-listed threatened species and priority places by supporting independent sub-projects and PhD projects.
All sub-projects and PhD projects will inform the conservation of terrestrial and freshwater priority species and places listed in the Australian Government’s Threatened species action plan 2022–2032 Commonwealth-listed Key Threatening Processes and/or the priorities of relevant state/territory agencies. Each sub-project and PhD project will have a clear pathway to impact. (The mix of sub-projects and PhD projects will be determined by the quality of the applications and their relevance to research user and hub priorities.)

Sub-projects will be selected through focused meetings with relevant officers from the Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s (DCCEEW’s) Office of the Threatened Species Commissioner and state and territory agencies, including the Wet Tropics Management Authority (WTMA).
The meetings will identify potential projects that address priorities and information gaps remaining after the outcomes are known for the current round of the Australian Government’s ‘Saving native species’ program and the funding rounds being conducted by state and territory agencies, such as Round 2 of the Queensland ‘Threatened species research grants’. These priorities will be matched with research expertise and capacity within the hub.
