Hub Steering Committee Queensland update

3 September 2019

Our Hub Steering Committee recently visited Cairns and other parts of far north Queensland for updates from some of our Queensland projects.

The Hub Steering Committee consists of representatives from all of the jurisdictions where the Hub conducts research, including federal and state government representatives, as well as Indigenous representatives from each of WA, Qld and the NT. The views of the steering committee are further diversified with voices from industry, conservation groups and regional NRM perspectives.

At this recent meeting, the committee stepped away from the boardrooms and instead boarded flights to see more of far north Queensland where some of our projects are conducting research.

The committee heard from Dr Helen Murphy about gamba grass control on Cape York, from Dr Justin Perry about feral animal control on Cape York and from Dr Norm Duke about assessing mangrove dieback in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Dr Ben Stewart-Koster, Professor Michele Burdford and Associate Professor Jim Smart also offered their respective insights into the environmental water needs of the Mitchell River catchment, the productivity of Gulf Rivers and creating an environmental-economic account for the Mitchell River.
