Background on the symbols

The symbols were designed to help our project teams tell the story of their research in Australia. They were also created to support knowledge exchange with Traditional Owners, Indigenous rangers, other land managers and government decision-makers. The collection includes symbols of invasive species, native plants and animals land uses, and people. The collection is intended to complement the IAN symbol library where you’ll find ~3000 more symbols.

We thank Professor Stephen van Leeuwen (Deputy hub leader, hub senior Indigenous facilitator) and Dennis Cooper for their wise advice in the creation of these symbols.

In the collection, we have included:

  • vector PDFs to use with Adobe Illustrator or InDesign
  • high-resolution PNGs for Microsoft Office apps and Canva.
  • a swatch palette with the colours of northern Australia (as an Illustrator swatch palette and a Powerpoint file).

Note that you must attribute the hub when you use the symbols. You’ll find this info in the metadata of each file.

Here are some examples on how to combine the symbols into a diagram.

We look forward to seeing how you use the symbols, so please tag/send us your creations!
